Building a beast

The Willis Expedition will deploy a 2.6 tonne bespoke communications centre built around the 170bhp Toyota Hilux 6×6.

The vehicle is being constructed in Iceland by Arctic Trucks. Key features include the 44” wheels which will provide superb traction in Antarctica despite extreme loads; and the 400 litre fuel tanks to give it incredible range.

The yet-to-be-named truck will provide logistical support to the science phase of the expedition whilst streaming live video and data during the speed record phase. Two Iridium Pilots systems are being fitted to the truck to send back pictures and data to Expedition HQ in London.
